Drone surveys for mines, plants and construction: survey video or mapping, and what each gives you

An inspection video and a measured map are different flights with different outputs. What each is good for, and what to ask before commissioning one.

“Can you do a drone survey of the site?” is a question with two very different answers, and the difference decides the flight plan, the software, the time on site and what lands on your desk afterwards.

One kind of survey is seeing: video and stills that show a site, a structure or a process from angles nobody can safely reach on foot. The other is measuring: hundreds of overlapping photographs stitched into a map or 3D model accurate enough to calculate a stockpile’s volume. Both are called surveys. They are not interchangeable.

Survey video: inspection and documentation

A survey video is flown by a pilot choosing angles — orbits around a structure, slow passes along a conveyor, a rise over a pit edge, a close look at a roof or a chimney from a safe distance.

It is the right tool for:

  • visual inspection of assets too high, too large or too hazardous to walk — stacks, roofs, conveyors, pipelines, transmission lines;
  • documentation for stakeholders, investors and management reviews;
  • progress reporting that people can understand without a GIS tool;
  • incident and condition records — what a structure looked like on a given date.

What it cannot do is measure. A beautiful orbit of a stockpile tells you it is large. It does not tell you it holds how many tonnes.

Mapping: photogrammetry and measured outputs

A mapping flight is flown by software, not by eye. The drone runs a grid of parallel passes over the site, taking photographs at fixed intervals with heavy overlap — commonly 70–80% forward and 60–70% to the side — so that every point on the ground appears in many images. Processing software then reconstructs the site as:

  • an orthomosaic — a single, geometrically corrected aerial image you can measure distances and areas on;
  • a 3D model or point cloud of the terrain and structures;
  • volumes of stockpiles, cut and fill;
  • contours and elevation models for planning and drainage.

Accuracy depends on two things. Ground sampling distance — how much ground each pixel covers — is set by flying height and camera. Positional accuracy comes from ground control points surveyed on site, or from RTK/PPK positioning on the drone; without either, a map can look perfect and still sit metres away from where it should be.

Many industrial clients need both — a monthly measured map for the engineers and a two-minute progress film for everyone else — and both can come from the same site visit if planned together.

Construction progress: the repeatable path

For progress, the value is in comparison. Month three is only useful if it lines up against month one. That means the same flight path, altitude, heading and time of day every cycle, saved and re-flown rather than improvised. Done well, a developer can cut every month together into a single time-lapse of the building rising — one of the most persuasive assets a project can publish.

The rules still apply

Industrial sites are not exempt from drone regulation. Airspace is checked against the DGCA map for the exact coordinates — see our guide to drone permissions in Odisha — and written permission comes from whoever controls the site. Mines, ports and plants also run their own safety regimes: flights are planned around blasting schedules, crane movements, vehicle routes and exclusion zones, with a ground brief with the site and security teams before take-off.

What to ask before you commission a survey

  • What is the deliverable? Video, stills, an orthomosaic, a 3D model, volumes?
  • How accurate does it need to be? Centimetres for engineering, or “clearly visible” for a report?
  • How often? One-off, monthly, or at each construction milestone?
  • What format? A video file, or GIS formats your engineers can open?
  • Who owns the data, and how long is it kept?
  • What permissions and site inductions are needed, and who arranges them?
